For Jerry and Annette Johns, supporting Voluntary Action Center has been a part of their lives for nearly as long as the organization itself. Drawn to VAC 56 years ago by the dedication and leadership of then Meals on Wheels Manager Ron Mullen, the couple quickly became committed to the mission of serving others.
Over the next two decades, Jerry and Annette volunteered as Meals on Wheels drivers, delivering not only nutritious meals but also kindness and connection to local seniors. Guided by a simple philosophy—be kind and help those who are less fortunate—they believe that donors, volunteers, and community members play a vital role in caring for neighbors in need, especially those facing hunger.
One of their proudest moments has been inspiring others to get involved, including a couple from their church who now enjoy volunteering and making a difference themselves. Looking ahead, Jerry and Annette hope to see VAC continue to grow and expand its impact.
Their message to anyone considering supporting VAC is simple: “Get involved—you may really like it and feel good about yourself.”
They also recognize that rising costs and reduced government support make community involvement more important than ever, reminding us that ordinary people can do extraordinary things to help those in need.
