The Summer Meals Program is a State of Illinois funded program to provide free nutritious meals and snacks for children from low income families during the summer months when there is no school. Voluntary Action Center is the administrator of the summer food program for DeKalb County.
During the months of June, July and August, meals are prepared by Voluntary Action staff for several local summer camp programs. Those camps that participate in the Summer Meals Program in DeKalb County include the DeKalb Park District, YMCA, KSRA’s Camp Maple Leaf, The Dream Project, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Cortland Library, The Epilepsy Foundation, Camp Power at Liberty Park, Camp Power at University Village and Basketball Camp at NIU Anderson Hall. The Summer Meals Program prepares and delivers an average of 500 meals per day.
